Cala Macarella and Macarelleta: untouched gems of southern Menorca

In the heart of Menorca’s southern coast, surrounded by pine forests and cliffs, lie two of the island’s most iconic and photogenic coves: Cala Macarella and Cala Macarelleta. With their turquoise waters, white sand, and pristine natural setting, these beaches are a must-see for anyone wanting to discover the island’s wilder, more authentic side.

Two coves, one paradise

Cala Macarella is the larger of the two, about 100 meters long, and sits in a small bay protected by tall cliffs. Its fine white sand and calm waters make it perfect for swimming and relaxing. Despite its popularity, Macarella has managed to preserve its natural charm thanks to access regulations in summer.

About 10 minutes away on foot, via a coastal path through the pine forest, lies Cala Macarelleta, a smaller and even more intimate cove, considered by many the hidden gem of Menorca. Its horseshoe shape and clear waters make it an ideal spot for snorkeling or simply disconnecting.

Protected nature and peace

Both coves are part of the Area of Natural Special Interest (ANEI), and are environmentally protected. This means there are no intrusive buildings or large services, helping to preserve their beauty.

Macarella has a small beach bar (Bar Susy), open in high season, and lifeguard service, but no showers or large infrastructures. Macarelleta, on the other hand, has no services at all, reinforcing its wild character.

How to get to Cala Macarella and Macarelleta

In summer, direct car access to the beaches is not allowed. To avoid overcrowding and protect the environment, access is regulated via a shuttle bus from Ciutadella or designated parking areas like Cala Galdana.

📍 Approximate coordinates for Cala Macarella: 39.9401° N, 3.9405° E

You can also reach them on foot via the Camí de Cavalls, with a scenic 40-minute walk from Cala Galdana offering stunning coastal views.

Cala Macarella and Macarelleta aren’t just beaches—they’re symbols of Menorca’s natural soul. Places where time slows down and the Mediterranean invites you to breathe and relax.
