Discover the Artrutx Lighthouse – Ciutadella – Menorca

The Artrutx Lighthouse, located on the southwestern tip of Menorca, in Ciutadella, is one of the seven historic lighthouses that guide sailors on the island. This lighthouse, opened in 1859, is one of the most iconic due to its white structure with black stripes and its strategic location overlooking the Mediterranean and the coast of Mallorca. The sunset here is an unmissable spectacle.

History

The history of lighthouses in Menorca begins with the maritime development of the 19th century, when the authorities decided to build a network of seven lighthouses to protect ships sailing through the treacherous waters of the island. In addition to the Artrutx Lighthouse, these include the Favàritx Lighthouse, Cavalleria Lighthouse, Punta Nati, Isla del Aire, San Carlos and Sa Farola. Each of them has its own history and charm, and together they form an essential part of Menorca’s cultural and maritime heritage.

The Artrutx Lighthouse still serves its purpose, although it has been modernised with electric power. Its surroundings have been adapted for tourism, with a restaurant that allows you to enjoy local cuisine while taking in the scenery. Renting a car is the best way to get around these lighthouses, offering the freedom to explore the most spectacular corners of the island, such as the beaches near Artrutx and the historic centre of Ciutadella, which is just a few kilometres away.

As well as being a historical and maritime landmark in Menorca, the Artrutx Lighthouse has evolved over time to become a unique space where visitors can enjoy not only the stunning view of the Mediterranean, but also the local cuisine. Today, the lighthouse houses a restaurant that, especially during the summer season, organises parties and special events.
